For a very longtime now, many Nigerians (home and abroad) have agitated for the need of State Policing .They say the need for state police can never be over emphasized.
Consequently, the Senators of the Federal Republic of Nigeria recommended and gave their full support for the creation of State Police .They said the Nigeria Police Force could not be trusted to guarantee the people's safety especially as the nation moves towards the 2015 general election .
In the Senators' contribution to the motion on the
The Senate President ,David Mark said he had abandoned his advocacy for Federal Police in the light of current realities and the need to cater for the citizen's safety.
He said "I used to be a strong advocate of Federal Government Police or Central Police. I am sure you have noticed that sometimes ago,I also changed my mind to say that maybe we should experiment with State Police and see what it is"
The Deputy Senate President ,Sen. Ike Ekweremadu, Observed that the panacea to the problem of the police called for urgent decentralisation of the force.
He said "About
"We must make up our minds to secure our people by decentralising the Police"
Senate Leader,Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba ,said the problem of the Nigeria Police Force is beyond funding but that the force was "Structurally Defected"
He said "The mentality of the police is still rooted in our colonial history .No matter how much you bring, you are not going to change it"
"The idea of a Single police for all the country is inconsistent with a federal system .This motion affords us the opportunity to restructure the police in line to what is obtainable in Federalism."
Senators Umaru Dahiru and James Manager also observed that state police is needed as 2015 is approaching .
Senator Oluremi Tinubu also supported the call for the State Police and Urged the senate to underestimate the issue of Security of the People.
This consensus among the Members of the Senate sounds so convincing and it looks like the way out of the insecurity eating deep into the Nigerian System but how are we sure that this "State Police" will not serve as instruments in the hands of Authorities to HUNT their adversaries.......
I believe Nigeria is very Close to Success ............
